I don't recommend affiliate programs for the reason a lot of gurus do. I know that there are a few people who make half a million dollars a year with their affiliate business. There aren't too many of them. Warren Buffet is the richest man in the world but there aren't too many Buffets in the world either.
I usually recommend affiliate programs because they do two very valuable things for both new marketers and veterans alike. The affiliate business is the perfect place to test market new ventures. You can test a product before you even make it. If you wanted to sell a hair restoration product because did the homework and found that there aren't too many pay per click ads for the product but there is a big demand for it. You can go to Commission Junction, Clickbank, Performics, or Linkshare to find a similar product. Take some time to research the market and put a 20 to 40--page report together. This is your free product; a gift for your new subscribers. You can then sign up for the affiliate program, create your squeeze page, spend $50.00 on Google AdWords and see if you can get a reasonable amount of traffic to sign up for a free report on hair restoration. Once they sign up, the report download page has an ad for the affiliate product. They can read the sales copy you created for the product before downloading the free report. They have an opportunity to buy the product as they download your free report. You now know if the market is good enough to pursue; based on your results. Your interest is not in the commission structure of the program, you want to generate leads from an existing product. You also want to see if people will buy the existing product. This is your test. Can you make money? Sure, you can. That is secondary to the research value of the affiliate-marketing program. You may recover your pay per click expenses but you now can validate the ability of the market for a range of products and services. If your test proved to be successful, you're going to stop using Google AdWords. The Google AdWords program is for rapid testing. Never spend money if you don't have to. You really don't make money by spending money; you make money by using money wisely when it's necessary to make even more money. If time is going to be an issue; then use money; but if money is an issue, use article marketing, leads swapping and joint venture partnerships to create your list. Remember, to generate a viable list of 5,000 to 10,000 names by Google AdWords is going to be expensive. Now you'll use affiliate products to keep your list and your income growing. The major issue is continuing to build your relationship with the list as you introduce new products. By the time you introduce your own product, your audience will have already been buying from you and trust that whatever you recommend will be in their best interest.
